I have written a couple times that I'd be back but as you can probably tell, the commitment wasn't really there. Every time I picked up my pencil I thought "yes, this is it!" believing that I'd get that spark back. It was short lived though as life had other plans for me.
I started this account in 2007 and haven't really submitted much art since 2008 when I first came to Canada. Never thought this was going to be the turning point of my artistic self. To be honest, I hadn't really made any plans to make a career out of it anyways. It was clear to me that this wouldn't pay the bills in the long run. Neither did I know how to make my art successful in any way.
As the years went by I could see myself spinning the wheels as everyone else does including all the lifechanging events along the way. Getting married, undergoing surgery, having a child, moving into our first house and of course pandemic. That's a lot to take in. And yet I still would just be spinning the wheels keeping me busy but not getting me further really.
That is until 2020 when I entered a new job, one that would actually line up with my passion and values. I started working for a small business that does all things art reproduction. From taking photos of original art to printing on fine art paper and canvas. I would be the new girl to hand stretch those beautiful canvas over hand built frames made in shop. I learned so much in that time from setting up files for printing, to coating freshly printed canvas (picking out the fine hairs that get in it while wet), to measuring and cutting the wood needed to make the frame, all the stapling, stretching, packing for shipment and so much more. And of course there is the getting to know of established and new artists in the area and beyond.
About a year later the business would expand and introduce a print press to print art cards and calendars which I would eventually fully take over. I am now in charge of the whole thing and the only person aside from my boss who even knows how to run the press. That is when I started getting my own work in, creating art cards myself, printing some more stationery stuff at home, crafting things and selling them at markets.
It was this breath of fresh air that finally gave my artistic journey new purpose. Yes, I could be successful with my art and I can learn how to run this thing on my own. Much of my art was mostly photo art since I have a sweet DSLR to play with and photoshop to add more style to my pictures.
And it wasn't until I watched Tangled for the first time this year (2023) that I picked up drawing again and more than just one or two pictures as you may have noticed. Watching this movie was probably the most inspiring thing since the time when I was fully emersed in Anime/Manga. The plot, the art, the characters and the music has caught me in a storm and I have never left since. Not sure whether I will come down from this high anytime soon but it's certainly given me new drive to imagine, to create and to share my creations.
I'm ready to do more, to create more and to be more.
Here is to new beginnings!
